"A Philosophy or a Literature to Survive in the 21st Century?"
On October 22nd, at 5:30 p.m., the International Courses Auditorium at the University of Salamanca will host a lecture by writer and professor Jesús G. Maestro, entitled "A Philosophy or a Literature to Survive in the 21st Century?"
The session, organized by the Spanish Language Schools of the University of Salamanca and one of its schools, ELE USAL Bilbao, will focus on his most recent work, "A Philosophy to Survive in the 21st Century" (2025), in which the author reflects on the cultural and social challenges of our time and the role that literature can play as an instrument of knowledge and interpretation of reality.
Jesús G. Maestro is a university professor specializing in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature, and has been a professor for more than three decades at the University of Vigo. His teaching and research work has spread to universities in Europe and America, in countries such as the United States, Canada, Italy, France, and Poland.
In addition to his work as a translator, author, and editor, he has extensive academic work on Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish Literature, Theater Theory, Hispanism, and the Theory of Literature. His most notable works include:
- Critique of Literary Reason, a monumental work of 25 volumes and over 3,000 pages, revised in 2025;
- Essay on the Historical Failure of Democracy in the 21st Century (2024);
- A Philosophy for Surviving in the 21st Century (2025), the focus of the talk in Salamanca.
A regular contributor to media outlets such as Grupo Vocento, Editorial Prensa Ibérica, and Brownstone España, Professor Maestro advocates for public, open, and free education. Along these lines, he shares his teachings online through his YouTube channel, where he offers free access to nearly 2,000 recorded classes.
