Over 250 Attendees and a Book Signing at a Memorable Literary Event
On October 22, 2025, the Auditorium of International Courses at the University of Salamanca was filled to capacity to host a lecture by writer and professor Jesús G. Maestro, titled “A Philosophy or a Literature to Survive in the 21st Century?”
The event, organized by the Spanish Language Schools of the University of Salamanca and ELE USAL Bilbao, exceeded all expectations, bringing together more than 250 participants including students, teachers, and members of the general public. The activity was part of the cultural initiatives promoted by ELE USAL to foster dialogue between literature and the challenges of contemporary society.
During his talk, Maestro addressed the main themes of his most recent book, A Philosophy to Survive in the 21st Century(2025), in which he reflects on the cultural, social, and political challenges of our time, and on the role of literature as a tool for knowledge, resistance, and understanding of reality.
The professor, who holds a Chair in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the University of Vigo, emphasized the need to recover the critical and formative function of culture in the face of the trivialization of thought. At the end of the lecture, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a book signing session thanks to the collaboration of La Latina Bookstore of Salamanca, which facilitated the purchase of the author’s works at the venue.
